HOOSEGG is the new wine of renowned winemaker Philip Shaw, former chief winemaker of Rosemount and Southcorp, and the founder of Philip Shaw Wines (now owned and operated by the next generation of Shaws, his two sons Damian and Daniel).
HOOSEGG 2017 Jade Moon Cabernet Franc Blend is the No.1 Ranked 2017 Cabernet Franc in Australia. Winepilot gave it 97 points saying: “Not many winemakers around Australia have got their heads around Cabernet Franc. But when done right this is a grape variety that can be every bit as good as Cabernet Sauvignon, if in a more elegant style. This version, with 7% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, is the complete package with its deep colour followed by a beautifully complex and fragrant bouquet – leaf, graphite and violets over a rich bed of blackberries. Dry and only mid weight but it displays a powerful core of dark yet subtle fruits with a surprisingly firm structure before a long and impressive finish. Oak is a little out there right now but give it five years and this wine will really sing.”
Vineyard | Koomooloo Vineyard, Orange NSW.
Varieties | Cabernet Franc 89%, Merlot 6% and Cabernet Sauvignon 5%.
Colour | Deep red colour.
Bouquet | Intense fruit, strong blackberry with very fine integrated oak aromas.
Palate | Strong intense varietal flavours. Showing great complexity and balance of fruit flavours, spicy oak and firm tannins. A beautiful example of Cabernet Franc varietal.
Serving suggestion | At least 20 years of careful cellaring, Shaw recommends.
Alcohol | 13.7%
About HOOSEGG: HOOSEGG is the dream that Philip Shaw has been working towards for nearly 60 years. In 2015, he made the decision to transfer the management of Philip Shaw Wines to his sons, Damian and Daniel.
His new venture HOOSEGG focusses on making small parcels of wine that can stand amongst the finest wines from anywhere in the world. Philip is a true craft winemaker, with an approach to guiding the direction of the wine, not controlling it, and always challenging the achievements.
“Every wine should be placed on its own canvas and not replicate others.”
Philip uses parcels of select fruit from the Koomooloo Vineyard which he established 30 years ago, along with state-of-the-art winemaking equipment, the best new oak - and all the lessons learned making wine over the past 60 years to produce his lauded small batch range.
This new venture is called HOOSEGG. Why? Well, the ‘HOO’ is Philip - to avoid any confusion with Philip Shaw Wines - and the ‘EGG’ is to symbolize ‘a new beginning’.
